I used to sit on a prayer bench for meditaion before I graduated to the zafu. I named my bench 'Sedes Sapientia', latin for 'Seat of Wisdom', one of the titles for Wisdom in Jewish/Christian tradition. I see the three legged stool as a Seat of Wisdom. We sit on it and the wisdom of Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, seeps up and into.
